My view of the IT director evolving to CIO role

  1. Manage the IT department as a profit center in an international group that considers IT as competitive advantage.
  2. Take responsibilities over IT projects (application development, software, hardware) involving more resources while managing IT staff from multi-national / multi-cultural environment.
  3. Meet with B.U. leaders in order to set expectations. Ensure mutual understanding : business needs vs. information technology. Proactively engage them on IT enablement of their business initiative. Plan the actions needed to complete business requirements. Bring the IT means that will allow them to increase productivity and even generate profit. Become a trusted-ally for B.U.
  4. Decide with the Group Management and the B.U. leaders, the IT priorities depending on business needs and the Group strategy.
  5. Ideally report to the CEO and be present at the ExCOM.
  6. Handle the budget responsibility and allocate it where it should be.
  7. Do not invest in technology when there is only a need for better communication or organization.
  8. Hire motivated staff that are versatile and always eager to increase their knowledge.
  9. Handle Appraisal and decide for bonuses and salaries: "More Carrots than Sticks". Always reward those who are eager to help the company growth and proactively try to improve processes. Verify that their skills are always in-line with the company needs.
  10. Manage the entity as a profit center and chargeback the B.U. that are using IT by putting in place the adequate indicators.
  11. Behave as a service leader and guarantee the service Level needed and use the necessary corresponding technology and means
  12. Ensure the data security and safety and guarantee data confidentiality and integrity.
  13. Really coach staff, transmit knowledge to motivate them and take the better out of them
  14. Negotiate contracts with providers and don't hesitate to make them compete against each other in order to keep the adequate market price. Avoid sticking with long-term contracts.
  15. Handle a yearly pre-established and individual training budget for improving both technical and interpersonal staff skills.
  16. IT must be considered as real added value to save productivity and even increase business
